Canoe Trip against Corona

Special for people from South-Africa or elsewhere: welcome!

Who am I?

Adriaan Theunisse is my name and I am 41 years old. As a child of skippers I was born and raised on the water. That still flows through my veins. I am married and we have four beautiful children. During holidays or spare time we like to be on the water: a motor yacht, sailing boat or canoe. Wonderful!

And then came the reports of the terrible misery in the Southern Hemisphere. Of course, Corona in the Netherlands is (or has been) very bad. We lost an elder from our congregation to the virus. And a lot of companies are financially struggeling. Fortunately, the best medical care is available to everyone. The Dutch government gives billions for aid packages. And the worst thing in the supermarkets is that they ran out of toilet paper once. That is different from what is happening in South Africa.

With a request for help for the Butterfly Way crèche and the MES Cape Town, two dreams merged. The last pieces of the puzzle fell into place. A canoe trip on the Rhine and doing something good for God and His people.

Monday 3 August I will start my canoe expedition in Iffezheim, Germany. I will take my tent and paddle down the Rhine. See how far I get. Until Saturday 8 August at the latest. Will I get to the Dutch border in Lobith? That is a distance of 530 kilometers! My mind says I will never make it. I honestly have never been in a canoe for more than 2 consecutive days. And I doubt it’s still as much fun on day 5 or 6. But I’m going to try! If I go for something, I don’t give up easliy. And certainly not if I can help other people with it.

With this trip I want to raise 35 000 €uro for help against corona misery in South Africa.

The proceeds are intended for the need of the Butterfly Way crèche and the MES Cape Town, both in South Africa. The Butterfly Way crèche is located on the edge of Vrygrond, near Cape Town. The crèche takes care of 75 underprivileged children. It is still unclear when the children can go to school again and at the moment the crèche has no income.

Fortunately, the crèche could partner with MES Cape Town ( MES is a Christian integrated social development organisation that has been actively working towards providing sustainable solutions to pervasive poverty in the inner cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Kempton Park in South Africa. Currently, the organisation is a registered Not for Profit Company, NPO, Public Benefit Organisation and has Section 18 A (tax benefit) status for South-African donors. MES focuses on pre-schoolers, learners, youth and adults.

Both MES and Butterfly Way crèche are committed to take to the streets to help the homeless and underprivileged families during the Covid-19 lock down. MES Cape Town assists and guides the crèche with various operational matters. My canoe challenge will benefit both these South African organisations financially.
